Oadby Wyggestonian RFC

52 - 33

(HT 38-0)

Old Coventrians RFC

Despite showing flashes of attacking quality and mounting a spirited second-half revival, Old Coventrians ultimately fell to a 52–33 defeat in a free-running, high-scoring encounter with Oadby Wygs.

The opening exchanges saw OW’s quickly take control of the ball. A big solid OWs pack ensured good possession for their backs from set pieces, and they were able to exploit gaps in the OCs defensive line and capitalise on their opportunities to build a commanding lead. At 7–0, the early signs were ominous, and despite a couple of moments of promise, OCs struggled to contain the opposition’s constant attacking threat. As the game progressed, the deficit continued to grow with OWs scoring a further seven unanswered tries.  By half-time, the scoreboard reflected the scale of the challenge ahead, with the opposition firmly in the driving seat 52 points ahead.

However, OCs refused to go quietly and it was two significant substitutions that was the catalyst of an incredible OCs comeback. Alfie O’Toole and Dan Miller – both making their first team debuts – entered the fray just after halftime and their youthful enthusiasm, grit and direct running seemed to bring an otherwise lacklustre OCs team to life.

A renewed attacking impetus sparked something of a revival, with some excellent individual moments and improved execution helping to put points on the board. The first OCs try came from some good ball retention across the team before Dan Anderson stretched out to score in the corner. Luke Ireland had been the OCs standout player for the full 80 minutes with his usual immense tackling and scything running a constant threat – and, at times, OCs only threat. His endeavours earned him a solo try just a few minutes later when he showed real quality and produced a lovely, angled run to score under the posts. Further pressure followed from the visitors, and a well-worked line out saw Luke Ireland take a lovely throw off the top into the arms of Sam Miles who danced his way past three defenders to score OCs third try. Could this be a mini revival – the OCs crowd were certainly enjoying the moment!

As were the OCs players who had re-discovered their mojo and started to play with confidence, skill and pace. Two minutes later, OCs secured their first try bonus point of the season with Elliot Sheepy powering over the line from a few yards out. OCs final try came from some sharp passing interchanges between the backs with winger, Ramesh Therwa, diving over in the corner. Four of the five tries were neatly converted by Jason Matthews. At the final whistle, the scoreboard had moved swiftly along to 52–33, leaving OCs with plenty to reflect on and wondering why it had taken them three and a half matches to start to play how they know they can.

Ultimately, the defeat will be a frustrating one for OCs. The attacking potential was clear, and the fightback demonstrated huge character. But first half defensive lapses, multiple handing errors and an inability to halt the opposition’s momentum proved costly in the end. There were, however, real positives to take away - particularly in the second-half response. Luke Ireland, back from his numerous holidays, was huge for the OCs and Elliot Sheepy carried hard and found some nice lines at the back of the lineouts. But the focus will now turn to tightening up defensively, cutting out those unforced handling errors and turning those promising attacking passages into a more complete performance next time out.
